Greetings Charger Nation,

August is approaching and while I would normally say, I trust you made the most of your summer, I am well aware this summer was beyond unique and sadly overshadowed by uncertainty.  However, I do hope you were able to enjoy some quality family time in a setting that brought tranquility and joy.

By now, everyone is aware that our School Board members voted unanimously to begin the 2020-2021 school year virtually and to delay the official start of school until August 31.  Please be sure to stay tuned to District updates via traditional media outlets, social media platforms, and email.

This email is to provide a few Suncoast updates and to emphasize the importance of completing the District’s Parent Questionnaire for each child in your household utilizing his or her student ID.  The information gathered through this survey will assist us greatly with instructional planning. Steps to completing the questionnaire which was launched today were sent to you directly by the District and are also available on the School District’s website or via links provided on their social media platforms. Please feel free to reach us at school should you still have questions.

For our Class of 2021 students, please note senior pictures are temporarily on hold as our contracted photographer offers the individual picture sessions on our campus rather than in an off-site studio.  This previous convenience is now presenting a challenge so we are working closely with the Leonard’s team to consider additional options.  We are hopeful to offer information soon as we know portraits are a senior year highlight and often given as a holiday gift.  Additionally, the dates of the College Admissions Boot Camp have been adjusted to align better with the new school calendar.  If you are currently registered for the fall session and need updated information or are interested in enrolling and would like to find out more information about this opportunity, please visit the Suncoast Foundation’s website at suncoastfoundation.org.

As for our new Chargers, we have postponed our Freshmen and Parent Orientations until closer to the start of school.  While we are disappointed that we are not able to host these events on campus, we are planning virtual experiences that will provide a wealth of information and guidance for future success.

Students who still have instructional materials (i.e. textbooks, library books, calculators, tech devices, etc.) in their possession should be on the lookout for information forthcoming regarding a drive through style collection day utilizing the parent pick up loop.  The Admin team is in the process of coordinating protocols under District direction for the collection and distribution of instructional materials.  While the collection of checked out materials will occur early in August, the distribution of instructional materials needed for next school year will actually follow a week or so later.  All of the specifics will be shared with you once finalized.

Finally, I wanted to celebrate the ongoing success of our Charger staff and students.  Despite unique and unforeseen circumstances that drastically changed the typical, spring testing season, our students showed tremendous resolve and were notably successful despite these new assessment formats.  Our percentages and pass rates in IB and AP for many content areas reflected previous performance levels and/or exceeded them.  The percentages of IB diplomas awarded increased, and while we still await the AICE results from Cambridge, we anticipate those success rates to be equally as high as the other accelerated programs.  This accomplishment was the end result of hard work and a commitment to high performance.  The return on investment was evident, and it is with great pride that I acknowledge our students and staff for this success and commend their efforts.  Go Chargers!

Thank you in advance for taking time to complete the District’s Parent Questionnaire and be sure to stay tuned for additional information regarding the 2020-2021 school year.

Respectfully,

Kathryn M. Koerner
